If Abba’s music can get a musical treatment, why not Prince? At least that’s the theory Universal Pictures has in their heads as they prepare to make a musical based on the late musician’s work.
It was announced yesterday that Universal had acquired the rights to a number of Prince’s classic songs from his catalog. At this point it’s unclear what those songs are, but it was announced that they are making an original musical film inspired by them. Don’t go expecting the next Bohemian Rhapsody or Rocketman though, as the storyline is said to be fictional, and the music will only drive the plot.
Prince’s career spanned over 4 decades, and the purple one sold more than 100 million records worldwide. He was one of the best-selling music artists of all times, and won multiple awards throughout his career, including 8 Grammy’s, 6 American Music Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. When he passed in 2016 at the age of 57 of an accidental opioid overdose, fans around the world went into mourning.
